During Jun 23-27, the 5th International Symposium on Cold Atom Physics (ISCAP-V), which was hosted by Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM, CAS), was successfully held at Three Gorges.

This series of symposiums was initiated in 2003 by the Center for Cold Atom Physics (CCAP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). It has been successfully held every even-numbered year since 2004, at Lushan Mountain (2004, ISCAP-I), Thousand-Island Lake (2006, ISCAP-II), Wuhan (2008, ISCAP-III), and Zhoushan (2010, ISCAP-IV). The ISCAP is sponsored by the Atomic and Molecular Physics division (AMP) of the Chinese Physical Society (CPS), CAS, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). ISCAP-V is organized by CCAP.

The number of participants of this ISCAP was more than the previous ones: there were 281 participants, among which 244 were representatives. The representatives included the experts and scholars from domestic and overseas, who have being engaged in the field of cold atom physics and related domains. The representatives out of mainland were from East Carolina University, Florida International University, Georgia Institute of Technology, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Rice University, University of Chicago, University of Michigan, University of New Brunswick, University of Pittsburg, University of Tokyo, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Acadimia Sinica, respectively. Mainland representatives are from Peking University, Tsinghua University, National Institute of Metrology, Beihang University, Beijing Computational Science Research Center, Beijing Institute of Airspace Control Device, Beijing Institute of Automation Control Equipment, Beijing Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics, Shanghai Jiaotong University, East China Normal University, Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Normal University, Shanxi University, University of Science and Technology of China, Hohai University, Guangdong University of Technology, South China Normal University, Hengyang Normal University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Hubei Normal University, Wuhan University, Institute of Physics (CAS) , Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Science, Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanic (CAS), National Time Service Center (CAS) and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (CAS), respectively.

The topics included ultracold atoms, matter-wave interferometry, atomic frequency standards, quantum information, quantum optics, ultrafast processes in atoms and molecules and novel concept in atomic and molecular physics, which were fully discussed among the experts through ways of invited lectures and posters. 4 of 36 invited lectures and 20 of 64 posters were presented by the representatives of WIPM, which showed that cold atom research team of WIPM is very active among domestic to the global colleagues.

This symposium was a highly successful conference, and the organization of the symposium was widely acclaimed.
