Thanks to the great support by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NNSFC), the 3rd International Symposium on Cold Atom Physics was hosted by Certer of Cold Atom Physics (CCAP) from the CAS in Wuhan from July 10th to 12th,2008. Since its inception in 2004, this serial symposium was hold every two years, to offer a chance of academic exchanges and mutual understanding for researchers on cold atom from all over the world.
Topics of this symposium include ultra-cold atoms and molecules, Bose - Einstein condensates and degenerate Fermi gases, quantum coherence and quantum optics, atom optics and matter-wave interference, quantum information, atomic frequency standard, laser spectroscopy and precision measurement, other application of cold atoms, new theories of atomic and molecular physics and new experimental methods. During the 3-day symposium, more than 200 researchers of cold atom field from well-known universities and research institutes of the United States, Canada, Germany, Russia, Singapore, Finland, Taiwan, Hong Kong .et and Mainland, shared their latest research results and academic experience. Members had a spirited discussion and exchange on relevant academic issues and cutting-edge research focus, and the conference carried a strong academic atmosphere.
CCAP from CAS was set up co-sponsored by Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM) and Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics in 2003, composed by Wuhan Base (relying on Magnetic Resonance and Atomic and Molecular Physics National Key Laboratory) and Shanghai Base (relying on Quantum Optics Academicals Key Laboratory). Since its inception, CCAP which adhered to the principle of open and movement, promoted cooperation and exchanges at home and abroad actively to attract outstanding research staff and domestic excellent young scientists to carry out short-term work in the center; thus the academic exchanges of CCAP were effectively promoted, and scientific researchers were able to keep abreast of the latest international development trends, clearly know the research direction, and carry out new topics and substantive cooperation in research in time. The favorable research environment created by the effective functioning of CCAP not only attracted a group of outstanding young people to join in, but also led the academic standards a qualitative leap, and a strong impetus to the domestic cold atom physics fields.
Experts and scholars participating gave a high evaluation to this seminar, and it was agreed that the scale of the symposium had continued to increase, the academic level was gradually increased, and to host such a high-level symposium would greatly promote the development of the domestic cold atom physics research. The participant of the leader of Basis Bureau said that CAS had paid more and more attention to the international exchange; they not only had a support program for the short-term and long-term exchange visits, but also from the policy level, experts were encouraged to return to full-time work to support domestic scientific research undertakings, and he sincerely hoped that the Chinese scholars to actively join the ranks of the domestic scientists together in the revitalization of China's scientific research career.
As a prelude to the seminar, NNSFC commissioned WIPM of CAS, to organize a summer seminar around the theme of "cold atomic physics and precision measurement", in which well-known experts and scholars in this area and related cross-cutting area at home and abroad were invited to conduct a week-long instruction.
